Who is this for?

What does a diabetic diet look like in Pakistan?

It is not sugar-free food from the pharmacy. It is ordinary desi food with smarter structure:

Glycaemic swaps

Higher spike Lower-spike swap
White maida naan Chakki-atta or mixed-flour roti
Plain white rice (large plate) ½ cup rice + daal + salad
Aloo paratha Egg omelette + 1 thin roti
Mango shake 1 small slice of mango after a meal
Biscuits with chai A handful of roasted chana or nuts

How Sadaf works with your medication

Diet changes can lower sugar quickly, so plans account for metformin, sulfonylureas, insulin and newer medicines like GLP-1s. Sadaf reviews your glucose log, plans meals to avoid hypos, and shares progress with your doctor so doses can be reviewed. Never change medication without your doctor.

Ramadan and diabetes

Fasting with diabetes needs a pre-Ramadan plan. Read the Ramadan diet guide for diabetics and book a review 4–6 weeks before Ramadan.

Understand your numbers

Test Normal Prediabetes Diabetes Typical target if diabetic*
Fasting glucose (mg/dL) < 100 100–125 ≥ 126 80–130
2-hour after meal (mg/dL) < 140 140–199 ≥ 200 < 180
HbA1c (%) < 5.7 5.7–6.4 ≥ 6.5 < 7 for most adults

*Targets are individual; your doctor sets yours (ADA Standards of Care).

HbA1c to average blood sugar

Estimated average glucose (eAG) = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7 (ADAG study). Discuss your targets with your doctor.

Order of eating: a simple trick that works

Studies show that eating vegetables and protein before carbohydrates in the same meal can noticeably reduce the after-meal glucose rise. In practice: start with salad and salan, then have your roti.

Hypos: preventing low sugar

If you take insulin or sulfonylureas (glimepiride, gliclazide), a big diet change can cause hypoglycaemia. Signs include shaking, sweating, confusion and hunger. Keep glucose tablets or juice with you, never skip meals on these medicines, and tell your doctor when your readings drop. Sadaf's plans flag these risks from day one.

Diabetes and the rest of the body

Diabetes rarely comes alone. Most patients also need attention to cholesterol, blood pressure, kidney function and fatty liver, and the plan covers all of them together. See heart health, fatty liver and kidney diet.

Frequently asked questions

Can diet alone reverse type 2 diabetes?

In some people, especially early on and with significant weight loss, blood sugar can return to the non-diabetic range (remission). It is not guaranteed and still needs monitoring. Sadaf sets realistic targets with you and your doctor.

Can a diabetic eat roti?

Yes, in measured portions. One medium chakki-atta roti paired with daal or chicken and vegetables is usually fine. Your portion depends on your readings and medication.

Which fruits are best for diabetics in Pakistan?

Guava, apple, pear, orange, jamun and berries, in fist-sized portions, ideally after a meal. Limit mango, chikoo, grapes and dates, and avoid fruit juices.

How quickly can HbA1c improve?

HbA1c reflects about 3 months of sugar levels, so meaningful change shows at the 3-month test. Daily glucose readings often improve within 1–2 weeks.

Aksar Pooche Jane Wale Sawalat (Roman Urdu)

Plate ka aadha hissa sabzi, chautha hissa protein (daal, chicken, anda) aur chautha hissa roti ya chawal. Meethe mashroobat aur juice se parhez karein.

Ji haan, aadha cup chawal daal aur salad ke saath.
